Circuit Breaker Repair
A circuit breaker is designed to trip and cut power during an overload or short circuit, but sometimes the breaker itself can fail. When a breaker malfunctions, it may not trip when it should, creating a dangerous situation where wires can overheat. Conversely, a faulty breaker might trip constantly for no apparent reason, causing frustrating power interruptions. Our repair service begins with a thorough diagnosis to determine if the issue is with the breaker or the circuit it protects. The expert electricians at Gragg Electrical Services use advanced diagnostic tools to accurately pinpoint the problem. This ensures we perform the correct repair, whether it is balancing a circuit’s load or replacing a defective breaker. We prioritize accurate diagnostics for effective results.
One common reason for a breaker repair call is a unit that feels hot to the touch. A circuit breaker should remain at a cool or slightly warm temperature during normal operation. If a breaker is noticeably hot, it can indicate a loose connection or an internal defect within the breaker. A loose wire connection at the breaker’s terminal screw is a frequent culprit, creating resistance and generating significant heat. This is a serious fire hazard that our electricians are trained to correct immediately. We will safely de-energize the panel, disconnect the wire, inspect for damage, and re-torque the connection to the manufacturer’s specifications. If the breaker itself is failing internally, we will recommend and perform a swift replacement.
Breakers can also fail due to age. The internal mechanical components of a circuit breaker can wear out after decades of service or after tripping numerous times. An old breaker may become weak, causing it to trip below its rated amperage, a condition known as nuisance tripping. More dangerously, an old breaker’s contacts can become welded together, preventing it from tripping at all during a real overload event. Our electricians can assess the age and condition of your breakers. If we find old, obsolete, or known problematic brands like FPE or Zinsco, we will strongly recommend replacement to ensure your home is properly protected. Investing in modern, reliable breakers is a crucial safety upgrade for any older home.
The repair process for a circuit breaker issue requires strict adherence to safety protocols. Our licensed electricians never work on a live panel without the proper personal protective equipment (PPE). We begin by identifying the problematic circuit and breaker, then we safely shut down the main power when a replacement is needed. We have a large inventory of common breaker types from all major manufacturers, allowing us to complete most replacements in a single visit. We ensure the new breaker is the correct type, brand, and amperage for your specific panel and circuit wiring. A proper fit and secure connection are essential for safe, long term operation, and we guarantee our workmanship.
Sometimes the problem is not the breaker but the circuit itself. A persistent trip can be a symptom of a hidden short circuit or ground fault in your home’s wiring. This could be a damaged wire inside a wall or a faulty appliance you are not aware of. Our electricians are skilled troubleshooters who can trace the circuit to find the source of the fault. We use specialized equipment to locate these hidden issues efficiently, minimizing the need for invasive exploration. Once we find the fault, we can perform the necessary wiring repair to resolve the underlying problem permanently. This comprehensive approach ensures we are not just treating the symptom but curing the electrical disease.
Another service we provide is correcting an overloaded circuit, which is a frequent cause of breaker trips. This often happens in older homes where fewer circuits were originally installed. You might have too many high draw devices, like a microwave and a toaster oven, running on a single kitchen circuit. The solution is not a larger breaker, which would be dangerous, but to split the load. Our electricians can run a new, dedicated circuit from your panel to the high-demand area. This provides the power needed without constantly overloading the system. This is a common and effective repair that greatly improves the functionality and safety of your home’s electrical system.
Ultimately, whether a breaker can be repaired or must be replaced depends on the nature of the problem. A loose connection can be repaired by a qualified electrician. However, if the breaker’s internal mechanism is broken, damaged, or worn out, replacement is the only safe option. Circuit breakers are sealed units that are not designed to be opened or repaired internally. Gragg Electrical Services will always provide an honest assessment and recommend the safest, most effective solution for your situation. Our goal is to restore your electrical system’s integrity and provide you with lasting peace of mind. You can trust our professional judgment and our commitment to your safety.

Mike W. Was so kind and was very concerned of our needs. We had a gfi box where the wire had croaded. And it was installed 30 yrs ago. Gragg electric was referred by our neighbor Nate Bergert they was here in 24 hours

Gragg Electric came through for us on our FULL GRIP Store Project in downtown Akron. The building was built in 1930 and Gragg took on the challenge. Great work guys!

This was a residential job to rewire (completely) a 70 year old house, so not an easy task. It took the amount of time I expected. I also expected my house to look like swiss cheese after the work was done. That was not the case at all. They found ways to fish wire that resulted in about 30% of the holes I expected. A new panel replaced a 10 year old panel put in by JENNINGS which was full of water, rust & damage. They replaced the service drop and weather-head. It was a lot of work and I am happy with the completed job. I would call them again for future work. Ask for Sean!

Solid choice for local electrical work. Highly recommend if you are in need of a quality electrician. Handles both residential and commercial.

A top notch company that is willing to do anything and everything to make you happy. The field team is great to work with, and the communication with the office staff is the best I've come across in a very long time. I build homes for a living, and Gragg hasn't missed a deadline yet and are always one of the neatest sub contractors I deal with. Most Common Circuit Breaker Repair Questions
A malfunctioning circuit breaker can be unsettling, and it’s natural to have questions about the repair process. Understanding the signs of failure and the solutions is key to maintaining a safe home. Here are answers to common questions about circuit breaker repairs.
A buzzing or humming sound coming from your electrical panel is a serious warning sign that should be addressed immediately by a professional electrician. The sound is often caused by a circuit breaker that is not functioning correctly. It could indicate that the breaker is overloaded and struggling to trip, essentially vibrating under the excessive electrical load. This condition generates heat and can quickly lead to the breaker failing completely or even causing a fire in the electrical panel. The buzzing might also be the sound of electrical arcing, either inside the breaker or at its connection point to the panel’s bus bar. This is an extremely dangerous situation that requires immediate attention.
Another common cause of a buzzing breaker is a loose wire connection. When the screw terminal holding the circuit’s wire is not tight enough, electricity can “jump” the tiny gap, creating a buzzing sound and significant heat. This is a major fire hazard. The problem could also be that the breaker itself is not seated properly on the bus bar. If the breaker’s contacts are not making a firm, solid connection with the panel, it can lead to arcing and buzzing. An electrician can safely de-energize the panel and check for these issues. They can tighten loose connections or reseat the breaker to resolve the problem.
In some cases, the buzzing may indicate that the breaker itself has an internal mechanical failure. The components inside are failing, and the unit can no longer handle the electrical load safely. In this scenario, the only safe solution is to replace the breaker. Do not ignore a buzzing sound from your panel. While a very faint hum can sometimes be normal, any distinct, loud, or crackling buzz is a sign of trouble. You should call Gragg Electrical Services right away. Our qualified electricians can safely diagnose the cause of the noise and perform the necessary repairs or replacement to eliminate the hazard.
It is very rare for a circuit breaker to trip for absolutely no reason; there is almost always an underlying cause. When a breaker trips, it is doing its job of protecting the circuit. Homeowners may perceive it as random if they cannot immediately identify the cause. One of the most common hidden causes is an overloaded circuit. You may not realize that several appliances running simultaneously, even in different rooms, are on the same circuit and their combined power draw is exceeding the breaker’s limit. This can cause intermittent trips that seem to happen for no reason, but they are actually a direct result of the circuit’s load at that specific moment.
A short circuit or a ground fault can also cause a breaker to trip. These faults can be intermittent, making them difficult to diagnose. For example, a frayed wire inside an appliance might only make contact and cause a short when the appliance is moved or vibrates during operation. Similarly, a loose wire connection in an outlet box might only create a fault under certain conditions. These situations create a real electrical hazard, and the breaker is tripping to protect you from it. An electrician can use diagnostic tools to test the circuit and identify these hidden, intermittent faults that cause seemingly random trips.
Finally, the circuit breaker itself could be failing. An old or worn out breaker can become overly sensitive and trip at a current level far below its actual rating. This is a condition known as nuisance tripping. While the trip itself is not caused by a dangerous overload, the fact that the breaker is not functioning correctly means it should be replaced. A faulty breaker is unreliable and cannot be trusted to perform correctly during a real emergency. If you are experiencing breaker trips that you cannot explain, contact Gragg Electrical Services. Our experts will systematically troubleshoot the issue to find the true cause and ensure your system is both safe and reliable.
If you touch your electrical panel and find that one of the circuit breakers is hot, not just slightly warm, it is a critical warning sign of a dangerous electrical problem. You should contact a licensed electrician immediately. A hot breaker indicates that an excessive amount of heat is being generated at that point in your panel. This heat is a direct result of high electrical resistance and is a significant fire hazard. The heat can degrade the breaker itself and the surrounding components in the panel, potentially leading to a catastrophic failure. Do not delay in seeking professional help, as this condition can escalate quickly.
The heat could be caused by several issues. The most common cause is a loose wire connection at the breaker’s terminal. If the wire is not securely fastened, the electrical current has to struggle to pass through the poor connection, which generates intense heat. Another possibility is that the breaker itself has an internal defect and is failing. The internal components are creating high resistance, causing the breaker to heat up. It could also mean the breaker’s connection to the panel’s bus bar is loose or corroded. This also creates a point of high resistance and dangerous heat. All of these are serious issues that require professional diagnosis.
While waiting for an electrician to arrive, you can take a precautionary step if you feel comfortable doing so. Try to reduce the electrical load on the circuit controlled by the hot breaker. Unplug or turn off appliances that are on that circuit. This will reduce the amount of current flowing through the faulty connection or breaker, which can help to lower the temperature and reduce the immediate risk. However, this is only a temporary measure. The underlying problem must be repaired by a qualified professional from Gragg Electrical Services. We will safely identify the source of the heat and perform the necessary repairs to make your panel safe again.
The decision to repair or replace a circuit breaker depends entirely on the nature of the problem. In reality, circuit breakers themselves are not repaired. They are sealed units containing carefully calibrated springs and mechanisms that are not designed to be serviced in the field. If the internal components of a breaker are worn out, damaged, or defective, the only safe and correct course of action is to replace the entire breaker. Attempting to open and fix a breaker would be extremely dangerous and would result in an unreliable device that could not be trusted to protect your home. Therefore, if the problem is with the breaker itself, replacement is always the answer.
However, many issues that seem like a “breaker problem” are actually issues with the connections to the breaker. For instance, if a breaker is tripping or getting hot because the circuit wire connected to it is loose, the solution is to repair that connection. A qualified electrician can safely power down the panel, disconnect the wire, inspect it for heat damage, trim it if necessary, and re-fasten it to the breaker’s terminal screw with the proper torque. In this case, the breaker itself may be perfectly fine, and the “repair” is focused on the wiring connected to it. Similarly, if the breaker is not seated correctly on the bus bar, removing and reinstalling it properly could be considered a repair.
Ultimately, a licensed electrician is the only person who can make the correct determination. They will perform a thorough diagnosis to understand why the breaker is not functioning correctly. If the diagnosis points to a loose connection, an overloaded circuit, or a fault elsewhere in the wiring, they will perform the appropriate repairs to the system. If the diagnostic tests show that the breaker itself is faulty, weak, or internally damaged, they will replace it with a new one of the correct type and rating. Gragg Electrical Services will always provide a clear explanation of the problem and recommend the solution that ensures the long term safety and reliability of your electrical system.
Testing a circuit breaker to determine if it is bad requires specialized electrical knowledge and equipment, and it should only be performed by a qualified electrician. One of the primary tests involves using a digital multimeter. An electrician will turn off the breaker and remove it from the electrical panel after shutting off the main power. They will then use the multimeter to check for continuity between the line and load terminals of the breaker. When the breaker is in the “on” position, there should be continuity, indicating a closed circuit. When it is “off,” there should be no continuity. A failure in this basic test indicates an internal mechanical problem.
Another important test is to check the voltage. With the panel energized and the breaker switched on, an electrician can carefully measure the voltage at the breaker’s load terminal. The reading should be approximately 120 volts for a single pole breaker or 240 volts for a double pole breaker. A reading of zero or a significantly lower voltage suggests the breaker is not allowing power to pass through correctly and is therefore defective. They may also perform a load test, using a special tool to draw a specific amount of current through the breaker to see if it trips at the appropriate amperage and within the specified time frame. This directly tests its protective capabilities.
Beyond these electrical tests, a physical inspection is also a key part of the diagnostic process. An electrician will look for any visible signs of damage to the breaker’s casing, such as cracks, scorch marks, or signs of melting. These are clear indications that the breaker has overheated and must be replaced immediately. They will also check for a “mushy” or weak handle, which suggests the internal tripping mechanism is worn out. Given the inherent dangers of working inside an electrical panel and the need for specialized tools, you should never attempt to test a circuit breaker yourself. Always rely on the expertise of a professional from Gragg Electrical Services to safely diagnose and resolve the issue.
If you have had a new circuit breaker installed and it keeps tripping, there are a few potential causes for this frustrating issue. The first and most likely reason is that the circuit is genuinely overloaded. The new breaker is simply doing its job by highlighting a pre existing problem. Perhaps the new circuit was installed for a specific purpose, but other outlets are also on that circuit, and the combined load of everything running at once is more than the breaker’s rating. An electrician can help you map out your circuits to understand what exactly is on each one and help you manage the loads to prevent trips.
Another possibility is that there is a short circuit or a ground fault somewhere in the wiring that the breaker protects. This is a hazardous condition that the new breaker is correctly identifying. The fault could be in the wiring of an appliance plugged into the circuit, or it could be within the permanent wiring in your walls. A sensitive, new breaker, especially an AFCI or GFCI type, is much more likely to detect these faults than an older, worn out breaker might have been. The tripping is not a flaw in the new breaker; it is a critical safety alert that a dangerous wiring problem exists and needs to be located and repaired by a professional.
While less common, it is possible that the new breaker itself is faulty. Although they are tested at the factory, manufacturing defects can occasionally occur. The new breaker could be overly sensitive and tripping at a current level below its rating. An electrician can perform a load test on the breaker to determine if it is tripping prematurely. It is also possible that the wrong type of breaker was installed for the application. For instance, certain motors can have a high inrush current when they start, which can sometimes trip a standard breaker. A “high magnetic” or HACR-rated breaker may be needed in these specific cases. Our experts at Gragg Electrical Services can diagnose the reason for the trips and implement the correct solution.
Yes, a bad electrical outlet is a very common cause of a tripping circuit breaker. The outlet, also known as a receptacle, can fail in several ways that create a fault condition. One of the most frequent issues is when the internal components of the outlet wear out. The contacts that grip the prongs of a plug can become loose over time. This can lead to poor connections that cause arcing, which can trip an AFCI breaker, or it can cause the wires connected to the outlet to overheat and short circuit. A visible sign of this is often scorch marks on the outlet’s face or a burning smell.
Another way an outlet can cause a trip is through incorrect wiring. If the hot and neutral wires accidentally come into contact with each other or with the metal electrical box, it will create a direct short circuit. This will cause an immediate and massive surge of current, and the circuit breaker will trip instantly to prevent a fire. This can happen if the insulation on the wires is damaged or if the connections on the back of the outlet are loose and touch. A ground fault can also occur if a hot wire touches the ground screw or the grounded metal box, which will trip either a standard breaker or, more quickly, a GFCI breaker.
If you suspect a bad outlet is causing your breaker to trip, you can try to narrow down the problem. Unplug everything from the circuit. If the breaker resets and stays on, plug appliances back in one at a time until the breaker trips again. The last item you plugged in is likely the source of the problem. If the breaker trips even with nothing plugged in, the fault is likely in one of the outlets or the wiring itself. At this point, you should call a professional electrician. Gragg Electrical Services can safely test each outlet on the circuit to find the faulty one and replace it, restoring safe power to your room.
An overload and a short circuit are two different electrical problems, both of which will cause a circuit breaker to trip. An overload is the most common reason for a trip. It occurs when you draw more electrical current from a circuit than it is designed to handle. For example, a standard bedroom circuit might be rated for 15 amps. If you plug in a space heater (12 amps), a television (2 amps), and a computer (3 amps) all at the same time, the total draw is 17 amps. This exceeds the circuit’s limit. The breaker’s thermal protection will sense the excess current causing a gradual heat buildup and will trip, usually after a few seconds or minutes, to prevent the wiring from overheating.
A short circuit, on the other hand, is a much more sudden and dangerous event. It happens when a “hot” wire carrying current makes direct contact with a “neutral” wire or a ground wire. This creates an unintended, low resistance path for electricity to flow. Because the resistance is so low, an enormous amount of current, potentially thousands of amps, rushes through the circuit almost instantly. The magnetic part of the circuit breaker detects this massive, sudden surge and trips immediately, typically within a fraction of a second. This rapid response is crucial to prevent the explosive energy of a short circuit from causing a fire or damaging equipment.
The key difference between them is the cause and the speed of the breaker’s reaction. An overload is about drawing too much power, and the trip is a thermal reaction with a slight delay. A short circuit is about electricity going where it should not, and the trip is a magnetic reaction that is instantaneous. Both are safety features of the breaker. If you have a breaker that trips, try to determine the cause. If you just plugged in a new appliance, it is likely an overload. If it trips instantly with a loud pop, it is likely a short circuit, which warrants a call to an electrician to find and fix the underlying wiring fault.
