Circuit breakers that trip repeatedly are a clear sign that something is wrong. A tripping breaker is a safety device doing its job, and it should not be ignored. The issue could be an overloaded circuit, where you simply have too many things plugged into one circuit. It could also be a more dangerous short circuit or ground fault caused by damaged wiring or a faulty appliance. Our electricians are expert troubleshooters. We can determine if the problem is a simple overload or a hazardous short circuit. We can then perform the necessary repairs, which might involve splitting a circuit or locating and fixing a wiring fault.

We also handle repairs related to outdoor electrical systems. Your outdoor outlets, lighting, and wiring are exposed to the elements and are more prone to damage and corrosion. We can repair or replace weathered outdoor outlets and ensure they have the proper weatherproof covers. We troubleshoot and fix landscape lighting systems that have stopped working due to cut wires or failed transformers. We ensure that all outdoor electrical components, especially those near pools or hot tubs, have the proper GFCI protection to prevent a serious shock hazard. Keeping your outdoor electrical systems in good repair is crucial for your family’s safety.

Our repair service philosophy is built on safety and professionalism. When our electrician arrives at your home, they will listen carefully to your description of the problem. They will then use their experience and diagnostic tools to troubleshoot the issue efficiently. Before performing any work, they will explain the problem to you in clear, understandable terms and provide you with an upfront price for the repair. You will know exactly what the job will cost before we start. All of our repairs are performed to the highest standards of safety and in compliance with all electrical codes.

I called Gragg Electrical Services, LLC to come out regarding my dryer outlet not getting enough power. They were able to get me on the schedule the next day at no additional charge! Cory Boosz came out timely and found the issue. He kindly explained what was going on and some potential solutions. Cory did a great job fixing the problem and didn’t even have to turn the power off so I could continue working. He also cleaned up after he was finished. Thank you Cory and Gragg for providing us with kindness and relief during a difficult time. I will definitely be using this company again.

My hot tub installation required a dedicated 240 volt circuit run from the main panel out to the back deck and I wanted it done correctly and safely. Gragg Electrical handled the whole thing including the disconnect box and weatherproof cover, pulled the permit, and the inspector actually complimented the quality of the work during the walkthrough. I have heard stories about hot tub wiring done wrong and I am glad I was not one of them. Brandon and his crew take the safety side of this work seriously and it shows.

We just finished a detached garage build and needed the whole structure wired from the subpanel to the outlets and lighting. The electrician from Gragg was efficient, clearly experienced with this type of work, and the finished product looks exactly like what I had pictured. Everything is properly grounded, the circuits are sensibly distributed, and it passed the electrical inspection without a single correction. For a project I was a little nervous about managing it went about as smoothly as possible.

The lights in my living room had been flickering intermittently for months and two different electricians had looked at it without finding the cause. Gragg Electrical spent the time to actually trace the issue back to a loose neutral connection at the panel that had been creating voltage fluctuations throughout the circuit. Problem solved on the first real diagnosis. Sometimes you just need someone who is willing to look harder and these guys did exactly that.

Our kitchen renovation required running new circuits for a double oven and an island with dedicated outlet circuits and Gragg Electrical coordinated seamlessly with the rest of our contractors. The rough in work was done on schedule, the inspector had zero notes, and the finish work after drywall was clean and precise. My contractor told me they were the easiest sub on the whole job and that kind of professionalism ripples through an entire project.

Most Common Electrical Repair Questions

When an electrical problem arises in your home, it can be confusing and concerning. Understanding some of the common issues can help you know when to call a professional. Here are the answers to some of the most frequent questions we get about electrical repairs.

Flickering or dimming lights are a common electrical issue that can have a variety of causes, ranging from simple to serious. The simplest cause is often a loose light bulb in its socket. Before calling an electrician, make sure the bulbs are screwed in tightly. Another possibility is that you are using a bulb that is not compatible with your dimmer switch, which can cause flickering. However, if the flickering is happening in multiple rooms or across an entire circuit, it points to a more complex issue that requires professional attention. It is not something to be ignored as it can indicate an unsafe condition.

One of the most common causes of persistent flickering is a loose electrical connection somewhere in the circuit. This could be a loose wire at the light switch, in the ceiling fixture box, or at a connection in a hidden junction box. A loose connection creates electrical arcing as the current jumps the small gap, which causes the lights to flicker and can generate enough heat to start a fire. This is a significant hazard. The flickering might also be a symptom of a failing circuit breaker or a loose connection back at the main electrical panel. An electrician needs to trace the circuit to find and tighten the faulty connection.

If your lights dim noticeably whenever a large appliance like your air conditioner, refrigerator, or microwave turns on, it is often a sign of an overloaded electrical system. The large appliance is drawing so much power that it is causing the voltage to drop across your entire system. This can indicate that your main electrical service is undersized for your home’s needs and may require an upgrade. It could also be a problem with a deteriorating neutral connection either in your panel or at the utility’s transformer. Due to the potential for serious hazards, any consistent flickering or dimming lights should be diagnosed by a licensed electrician from Gragg Electrical Services.

An electrical outlet that suddenly stops working is a very common problem, and there are several potential reasons for the failure. The first and simplest thing to check is your circuit breaker panel. Locate the breaker that controls the circuit for the dead outlet and see if it has tripped. If it has, resetting it may solve the problem. Another common cause is a tripped GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlet. GFCI outlets are designed to protect an entire series of outlets, so a GFCI in your bathroom could trip and cause an outlet in your bedroom to stop working. Look for any GFCI outlets in your home, press the “Reset” button, and see if that restores power.

If the breaker and GFCIs are all fine, the problem is likely with the outlet itself or its wiring. The connections behind the outlet can become loose over time, causing the outlet to fail. The outlet itself can also simply wear out and break internally. The small metal contacts that grip the prongs of a plug can lose their tension, leading to a poor connection. In some cases, a method called “backstabbing,” where wires are pushed into the back of an outlet instead of being secured under screws, is a frequent point of failure as the wires can easily come loose.

Another possibility is that there is a broken wire or a failed connection in another outlet box upstream on the same circuit. In many homes, the power is daisy-chained from one outlet to the next. A loose connection in one outlet can cause all the subsequent outlets on the circuit to lose power. This is why troubleshooting a dead outlet often requires an electrician to test multiple points along the circuit to find the exact location of the break in the chain. Our experts at Gragg Electrical Services have the tools and expertise to quickly and safely find the source of the problem and perform the correct repair.

Two-prong outlets are an indication of an older, ungrounded electrical system. While they are not illegal to have in an older home, they are inherently less safe than modern three-prong grounded outlets. The third, round slot on a modern outlet is the ground connection. This ground provides a critical safety path for electricity to flow in the event of a fault in an appliance. Without this ground path, the metal frame of an appliance could become energized during a fault, creating a serious shock hazard. Two-prong outlets offer no such protection.

Using “cheater” adapters to plug a three-prong cord into a two-prong outlet is also an unsafe practice. These adapters give you no grounding protection whatsoever, as there is no ground in the outlet to connect to. This leaves you and your electronics vulnerable. The safest and most correct solution for dealing with two-prong outlets is to have the circuit rewired with modern, grounded electrical cable. However, this can be a very expensive and invasive project. Fortunately, the National Electrical Code provides a safe and more affordable alternative for upgrading these outlets.

A licensed electrician can replace a two-prong outlet with a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) receptacle. A GFCI provides excellent personal protection against electric shock, even on an ungrounded circuit. It works by sensing any imbalance in the current and shutting the power off instantly if it detects a ground fault. The electrician must place a sticker on the outlet that says “No Equipment Ground.” This makes the outlet safe for personal use, though it still does not provide a ground for surge protectors. This is a common and effective repair that significantly improves the safety of an older home.

A light switch, including a dimmer switch, should never feel hot to the touch. It is normal for a dimmer switch to feel slightly warm during operation, but if any switch feels noticeably hot, it is a sign of a dangerous electrical problem that requires immediate attention. A hot switch is an indication that there is too much electrical resistance at that point, which is generating heat. This heat can melt the switch’s internal components and the wire insulation, potentially leading to a fire inside your wall. You should stop using the switch immediately and call an electrician.

There are two primary causes for a hot light switch. The first is that the switch itself is faulty or is failing. The internal contacts of the switch can become worn or corroded over time, creating a poor connection that generates heat as electricity struggles to pass through it. The second, and more common, cause is a loose wire connection at the terminal screws on the side of theswitch. If the wires are not securely fastened, it creates a point of high resistance and heat. This is a very common failure point, especially in older installations.

Another possibility is that the switch is controlling a load that exceeds its amperage rating. For instance, if a standard 15-amp switch is being used to control a series of lights or a motor that draws more than 15 amps, the switch will overheat. This is particularly common with dimmer switches, which have a maximum wattage rating. If you connect more light bulbs than the dimmer is rated to handle, it will get very hot and fail prematurely. A licensed electrician can diagnose the cause of the heat, whether it is a loose wire or a faulty switch, and perform the necessary repair or replacement to eliminate the fire hazard.

A buzzing sound coming from an electrical outlet or switch is a serious warning sign that should not be ignored. The buzzing is almost always caused by electrical arcing due to a loose connection. Electricity is “jumping” across a tiny gap where a wire is not making solid contact with a terminal screw or where the internal components of the outlet are failing. This arcing creates a vibration that you hear as a buzzing or crackling sound. More importantly, the arc generates intense heat, which is a significant fire hazard. The heat can easily melt the plastic outlet and ignite the surrounding materials in the wall.

If you hear a buzzing sound, you should immediately stop using the outlet and unplug anything connected to it. The problem is most likely a loose wire connected to the outlet’s terminal screws. Over time, wires can expand and contract with temperature changes, and connections can sometimes work themselves loose. Another common cause is the use of “backstab” connections on cheaper outlets, where the wire is just pushed into a spring-loaded hole. These connections are notorious for failing and causing arcing. The buzzing could also indicate that the outlet itself is old and worn out and the internal contacts are no longer making a good connection with the plug.

Because of the serious fire risk associated with arcing, a buzzing outlet should be repaired as soon as possible by a licensed electrician. An electrician will safely turn off the power, remove the outlet, and inspect the wiring and connections. They can tighten any loose wires and will typically replace the faulty receptacle with a new, high-quality one, ensuring all connections are made securely to the screw terminals. They will also inspect the wires for any signs of heat damage. This is a relatively quick and inexpensive repair that can prevent a potential house fire.

Yes, a licensed electrician can perform specific, approved repairs to make a home with older aluminum branch circuit wiring safer. Aluminum wiring was commonly used in homes built in the 1960s and early 1970s due to a spike in copper prices. However, it was later discovered to be a significant fire hazard because aluminum expands, contracts, and corrodes differently than copper. This causes connections at outlets, switches, and fixtures to become loose over time, leading to overheating and fires. It is no longer used for general purpose branch circuit wiring.

Completely rewiring the entire house with copper is the most permanent solution, but it is also extremely expensive and disruptive. Fortunately, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has approved a few specific repair methods that are more affordable. The most recommended permanent repair method is called “copalum.” This involves using a specialized tool to crimp a short piece of copper wire (a pigtail) onto the end of each aluminum wire at every connection point in the house. The copper pigtail is then connected to the standard outlet or switch. This method creates a safe, permanent connection but requires a certified electrician with the specialized tool.

A more common and widely accepted repair method is to use special connectors designed specifically for joining aluminum to copper wire. These are small, purple-colored twist-on connectors, such as the AlumiConn connector, which contain a special antioxidant compound. An electrician will use these connectors to attach copper pigtails at every junction. This is a very effective method for mitigating the risks of aluminum wiring. Simply replacing the outlets with ones rated for aluminum wire is not considered a sufficient repair. If your home has aluminum wiring, contact Gragg Electrical Services to discuss these approved repair options.

If a circuit breaker in your panel has tripped and it will not reset, it is your electrical system’s way of telling you that there is a persistent and potentially dangerous problem on that circuit. A breaker that trips instantly every time you try to turn it back on indicates a direct short circuit or a ground fault. This means that somewhere on the circuit, a hot wire is touching a neutral or ground wire. You should immediately stop trying to reset the breaker, as forcing it could lead to a fire. The fault must be located and repaired before the circuit can be safely used again.

The first troubleshooting step a homeowner can take is to unplug every single appliance, lamp, and device that is on that particular circuit. The fault may be inside one of these devices. A frayed cord or an internal short in a toaster or a hair dryer could be the cause. Once everything is unplugged, try resetting the breaker one more time. If it now stays on, the problem is with one of the items you unplugged. You can then plug them back in one by one until the breaker trips again to identify the faulty appliance. That appliance should then be repaired or discarded.

If the breaker still will not reset even after everything has been unplugged from the circuit, the problem lies within the permanent wiring of your home. This could be a loose connection or a damaged wire inside an outlet box, a switch box, or a ceiling fixture. Finding this type of fault requires the diagnostic skills and equipment of a licensed electrician. They can systematically trace the circuit to find the location of the short without having to open up all your walls. Never ignore a breaker that will not reset; it is a critical safety warning that needs professional attention.

A GFCI, or Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter, is a special type of safety outlet designed to protect people from a deadly electric shock. It is required by electrical code in all areas of a home where electricity might come into contact with water. This includes all outlets in bathrooms, kitchens (for countertop use), garages, unfinished basements, crawlspaces, and all outdoor receptacles. A GFCI works by constantly monitoring the flow of electrical current in both the hot and neutral wires of the circuit. In a normal circuit, the current flowing out should be exactly equal to the current flowing back.

If the GFCI detects even a tiny difference in this current, as small as 4 to 5 milliamps, it assumes that the missing current is leaking out of the circuit through an unintended path. This unintended path is often a person’s body. For example, if you are using a hairdryer with a frayed cord and your hand is wet, a small amount of current could travel through you to the faucet, creating a ground fault. The GFCI will detect this dangerous leakage in as little as 1/40th of a second and instantly shut off the power to the outlet, potentially saving your life. A standard circuit breaker is not sensitive enough to detect these small, life-threatening currents.

It is a crucial safety device, and its protection is vital in wet locations. If your older home does not have GFCI outlets in these required areas, it is one of the most important and affordable electrical safety upgrades you can make. A licensed electrician can easily replace your standard outlets in these locations with new GFCI receptacles. One GFCI outlet can also be wired to protect other standard outlets downstream on the same circuit, providing widespread protection from a single device. Our electricians can inspect your home and ensure you have GFCI protection everywhere it is needed.
