Electrical Panel Installation
A new electrical panel installation is a foundational part of any new construction project. The panel, also known as a breaker box or load center, serves as the central distribution point for all the circuits in your home. It receives the main power from the utility and distributes it safely to your lights, outlets, and appliances. At Gragg Electrical Services, we understand that the quality of this initial installation determines the safety and reliability of the entire system for decades to come. Our electricians are experts in new panel installations, ensuring your new home or addition starts with a perfectly installed electrical core. We are committed to setting the standard for safety and quality.
Choosing the right size panel is the first and most important step in a new installation. The capacity of a panel is measured in amps, with 200 amps being the current standard for most new single-family homes. This size provides ample power for all the demands of a modern household, including large appliances, HVAC systems, and high-tech electronics, with room to spare for future additions like an EV charger or a hot tub. Our electricians perform a detailed load calculation based on the square footage of your home and your planned appliances. This ensures we install a panel, such as a 150-amp or 200-amp model, that perfectly matches your home’s specific power requirements.
We exclusively install high-quality electrical panels from reputable and trusted manufacturers like Square D, Eaton, and Siemens. The quality of the panel itself matters for long-term safety and durability. We help you select a panel that not only meets your amperage needs but also has enough physical space for all the circuit breakers your home will require. A panel with plenty of extra breaker slots is a wise investment, making it much easier and less expensive to add new circuits in the future. Our experience helps us guide you to the best equipment choice for your new construction project, balancing performance, budget, and future-readiness.
The physical installation of a new electrical panel requires precision and strict adherence to the National Electrical Code. Our licensed electricians will securely mount the new panel enclosure to the framing of your new home in a location that meets all code requirements for accessibility and clearance. We then install the main breaker and the grounding and neutral bus bars. We meticulously connect the heavy service entrance conductors that bring power into the home from the meter. Every connection is torqued to the manufacturer’s exact specifications to ensure a solid and reliable bond that will not loosen or overheat over time. This attention to detail is critical for safety.
Once the panel is mounted, we begin the process of installing the individual circuit breakers and connecting the branch circuits that will power your home. We neatly route the various electrical cables into the panel through proper connectors. Each circuit’s hot wire is connected to a new breaker, while the neutral and ground wires are terminated at their respective bus bars. We take pride in our clean and organized panel wiring. A neat panel is not just about aesthetics; it makes future troubleshooting and additions much easier and safer for any electrician who may work on it down the road. Our workmanship reflects our commitment to professionalism.
Proper grounding and bonding are arguably the most critical safety aspects of a new panel installation. Our electricians install a complete grounding electrode system, which typically includes driving ground rods and bonding to the metallic water service pipe. This system is then connected to the panel’s ground bus bar. We also install the main bonding jumper, which connects the ground and neutral systems together at this single point, as required by code. This complex system is what protects you from shock and allows your circuit breakers to function correctly during a fault. We ensure this foundational safety system is installed perfectly.
A new panel installation is a core component of a new construction electrical project and is always subject to a series of inspections by the local building authority. Our work is designed to pass these inspections with ease. We coordinate with the general contractor to ensure the panel is installed at the appropriate time during the construction schedule. We handle all interactions with the electrical inspector to demonstrate compliance and get the necessary approvals to energize the system. When you hire Gragg Electrical Services, you can be confident that your new electrical panel installation will be of the highest quality, fully code-compliant, and ready to safely power your new home for a lifetime.

Mike W. Was so kind and was very concerned of our needs. We had a gfi box where the wire had croaded. And it was installed 30 yrs ago. Gragg electric was referred by our neighbor Nate Bergert they was here in 24 hours

Gragg Electric came through for us on our FULL GRIP Store Project in downtown Akron. The building was built in 1930 and Gragg took on the challenge. Great work guys!

This was a residential job to rewire (completely) a 70 year old house, so not an easy task. It took the amount of time I expected. I also expected my house to look like swiss cheese after the work was done. That was not the case at all. They found ways to fish wire that resulted in about 30% of the holes I expected. A new panel replaced a 10 year old panel put in by JENNINGS which was full of water, rust & damage. They replaced the service drop and weather-head. It was a lot of work and I am happy with the completed job. I would call them again for future work. Ask for Sean!

Solid choice for local electrical work. Highly recommend if you are in need of a quality electrician. Handles both residential and commercial.

A top notch company that is willing to do anything and everything to make you happy. The field team is great to work with, and the communication with the office staff is the best I've come across in a very long time. I build homes for a living, and Gragg hasn't missed a deadline yet and are always one of the neatest sub contractors I deal with. If you're looking for an electrical contractor, this is where you want to be.

Gragg Electrical Services: They helped us out in a pinch. We had an issue where we need someone out the same day to deal with a parking lot lighting issue. Not only did they come out same day and diagnose the issue. They were able to provide a solution and come out the next day to resolve it. Mind you we had other vendors on this who could not provide the same level of service Gragg Electrical did. I will be using them again for any electrical needs we have. Thank you so much for hard work on this for us.

Most Common Electrical Panel Installation Questions
Installing a new electrical panel is a major step in any construction project. Understanding the process, the choices, and the safety requirements is important for any homeowner. Here are the answers to the most common questions about new electrical panel installation.
While several reputable manufacturers produce high-quality electrical panels, electricians often have preferences based on their experience with durability, design, and ease of installation. Brands like Square D (by Schneider Electric), Eaton (often associated with Cutler-Hammer), and Siemens are widely considered to be the top-tier choices for residential load centers in the industry. These companies have a long-standing reputation for producing reliable and safe equipment that meets rigorous UL (Underwriters Laboratories) standards. Their panels and circuit breakers are known for their robust construction and consistent performance over many years of service.
Square D’s QO and Homeline series are extremely popular with electricians and homeowners alike. The QO series is often considered a premium product with features like a signature trip window on the breakers, while the Homeline series is a high-quality and more budget-friendly option. Eaton’s CH and BR series are also highly regarded, known for their durable build and straightforward design. Siemens also produces excellent panels that are known for their quality and are often specified by builders and contractors. When you work with a professional contractor like Gragg Electrical Services, we will typically recommend one of these trusted brands to ensure you get a safe and dependable product.
Ultimately, the “best” brand is less important than the quality of the installation itself. A top-of-the-line panel installed incorrectly is far more dangerous than a standard-quality panel installed perfectly by a licensed electrician. The most critical factor is that the electrician installs a panel from a reputable manufacturer and does not use a brand known for safety issues, such as Federal Pacific or Zinsco. We will guide you in selecting a high-quality panel from a trusted brand and ensure that it is installed with the meticulous attention to detail that safety demands. The quality of the workmanship is what truly creates a safe electrical system.
The number of circuits you can have in an electrical panel is determined by its physical design, not just its amperage rating. The panel’s specification will list the maximum number of circuits it can accommodate. This is often indicated by a number in the model number, such as a “40/40” panel, which means it has 40 full-size slots and can hold 40 circuits. Some panels are “40/80,” which means they have 40 slots but can hold up to 80 circuits by using tandem breakers in designated positions. A tandem breaker is a space-saving unit that fits two circuits into a single slot.
When planning a new panel installation for a new home, it is crucial to choose a panel with more circuit spaces than you currently need. Modern homes have a growing number of electrical demands, many of which require their own dedicated circuit. These include circuits for the kitchen small appliances, microwave, dishwasher, garbage disposal, furnace, air conditioner, water heater, dryer, and range. In addition, you will have numerous circuits for general lighting and outlets in all the rooms. It is easy to see how the number of circuits can add up quickly, even in a moderately sized home.
Our electricians will help you select a panel that provides plenty of spare capacity for the future. A panel with at least 10 to 12 empty slots after the initial construction is a good target. This future-proofs your home, making it much simpler and more affordable to add new circuits later on for things like a hot tub, a workshop in the garage, an electric vehicle charger, or a home addition. Choosing a larger panel from the start is a very small incremental cost during construction but can save you from a very expensive panel upgrade project down the road when you run out of space.
The National Electrical Code (NEC) has very strict rules about where a new electrical panel can be located to ensure it is both safe and accessible. The panel must be installed in a dry, well-ventilated location that is not exposed to moisture. This means that installing a panel in a bathroom, a clothes closet, or a steam room is strictly prohibited. These environments have high humidity and a risk of water exposure, which could lead to corrosion and dangerous failures inside the panel. The space around the panel must also be kept clear.
The NEC requires a dedicated working clearance space around the electrical panel. This space is intended to give an electrician or an emergency responder a safe area to work without being cramped or risking contact with live parts. The required clearance is a space that is 3 feet deep, 30 inches wide (or the width of the panel, whichever is greater), and extends from the floor to a height of 6.5 feet. This entire clearance area in front of the panel must be kept clear at all times. You cannot use this space for storage, shelving, or to place large equipment.
Common and acceptable locations for a main panel in a new home include an unfinished basement, a utility room, or an attached garage. These locations are typically dry, accessible, and provide enough space to meet the clearance requirements. The panel cannot be located in a stairwell where it could impede egress. It must be readily accessible and not hidden behind a locked door or require a ladder to reach. When we work on a new construction project, we will coordinate with the builder to select a location for the panel that is both convenient and fully compliant with all of these critical NEC safety regulations.
A main breaker panel is the standard type of electrical panel used in modern home construction. It is distinguished by having a single large circuit breaker, known as the “main breaker,” located at the top of the panel, separate from the other breakers. This main breaker serves two critical functions. First, it acts as the master on/off switch for the entire electrical system in your house. In an emergency or when major electrical work is being done, you can shut off this one breaker to de-energize every circuit in the home simultaneously (with the exception of the wires feeding the main breaker itself).
The second and more important function of the main breaker is to provide overcurrent protection for the entire panel and the main service entrance wires. The amperage rating of the main breaker matches the service capacity of your home. For example, a home with 200-amp service will have a 200-amp main breaker. If the total electrical demand of your house ever exceeds 200 amps, the main breaker will trip. This prevents you from dangerously overloading your home’s main service conductors and the panel’s bus bars, which are the copper bars that distribute power to the individual circuit breakers.
In contrast, some very old homes might have a “main lug only” panel. These panels do not have a single main breaker inside them. Instead, they often had a separate disconnect fuse block or breaker located further upstream, sometimes near the electric meter. Modern residential installations almost exclusively use main breaker panels because they provide a much more convenient and integrated way to disconnect power and protect the entire system. When Gragg Electrical Services performs a new panel installation, we will install a high-quality main breaker panel appropriately sized for your home’s needs.
A subpanel is essentially a smaller electrical panel that gets its power from the main panel rather than directly from the utility service. You might need a subpanel installed for several common reasons during a new construction project or a major renovation. The most common reason is for convenience and to reduce wiring costs when powering a separate structure. If you are building a detached garage, a workshop, or a large barn, installing a subpanel in that building is much more efficient than running numerous individual circuits all the way from the main panel in the house. An electrician can run a single, heavy-duty feeder wire from the main panel to power the subpanel in the outbuilding.
Another reason to install a subpanel is to add more circuit capacity when your main panel is full. While this is more common in an upgrade scenario, it can sometimes be a factor in a new installation if the home is very large or has extraordinary power needs, such as extensive outdoor lighting and heating systems. A subpanel can be installed next to the main panel to provide the additional breaker slots required to accommodate all of the home’s circuits. This can sometimes be a more practical solution than installing a single, massive main panel.
When a subpanel is installed, it must be wired correctly according to specific code rules. A key difference between a main panel and a subpanel is that in a subpanel, the ground and neutral bus bars must be kept separate. They are not bonded together as they are in the main panel. This is a critical safety rule to prevent objectionable current from flowing on the grounding conductors. Our licensed electricians are experts in the proper installation of subpanels, ensuring they are wired safely and have the capacity needed for the area they serve.
A load calculation is a standardized mathematical procedure that electricians use to determine the total electrical demand of a home. It is one of the most important preliminary steps in designing a new electrical system or planning a major upgrade. The purpose of the load calculation is to accurately determine the minimum required size for the home’s main electrical service and the main electrical panel. This ensures that the system is robust enough to safely power all of its connected loads without being overloaded. The method for this calculation is detailed in Article 220 of the National Electrical Code.
The calculation is a systematic process of adding up all the potential electrical loads in the house. This includes general lighting loads, which are calculated based on the home’s square footage. It also includes the required small appliance and laundry circuits. Then, the calculation adds in the specific loads of all major fixed appliances, such as the electric range, dryer, water heater, dishwasher, garbage disposal, and the HVAC system (heating and air conditioning). The NEC provides specific rules and demand factors to apply to these various loads, as it is understood that not all appliances will be running at their full capacity at the same time.
Performing an accurate load calculation is a job for a qualified electrician. It requires a thorough understanding of the NEC rules and the ability to gather all the necessary information about the home’s design and planned appliances. An incorrectly performed calculation could result in the installation of an undersized electrical service, which could lead to years of problems with overloading and may require a costly upgrade later. When Gragg Electrical Services designs a new electrical system, we perform a detailed load calculation to ensure we install a panel and service that are perfectly and safely sized for your new home.
In a new construction environment, the installation of a new electrical panel is just one part of the overall electrical rough-in process. The rough-in phase is when all the wiring, electrical boxes, and the panel itself are installed in the open walls before any insulation or drywall is put up. The specific task of mounting the panel, making the service connections, and landing the new circuit wires in the panel can typically be completed by a licensed electrician in about one to two days, depending on the size and complexity of the home. This timeline is integrated into the larger construction schedule.
The entire electrical rough-in process, which includes wiring the whole house, can take a week or more for an average-sized home. The panel installation happens during this phase. The electrician will mount the panel box early in the process and then run all the individual circuit cables from the various rooms back to the panel location. Once all the wires are run, the final connections inside the panel are made. This work must be completed before the pre-drywall electrical inspection can be performed by the local building inspector.
It is important to differentiate this from a panel upgrade in an existing, occupied home, which is a different process. For a new construction panel installation, the work is done in an open and accessible environment without the need to worry about power interruptions for a homeowner. The timeline is dictated by the flow of the overall construction project. Gragg Electrical Services works closely with general contractors to ensure the panel installation and the entire electrical rough-in are completed efficiently and on schedule to keep the project moving forward smoothly.
Yes, absolutely. The installation of a new electrical panel and the associated wiring system in a new home is a major construction task that is strictly regulated and requires a series of inspections by your local city or county building department. These inspections are not optional; they are a mandatory part of the building process. Their purpose is to have a certified, third-party expert verify that all the electrical work has been performed safely and in full compliance with the current National Electrical Code and any local amendments. This is a critical step to ensure the future occupants of the home will be safe.
Typically, in a new build, there are at least two main electrical inspections. The first is the “rough-in” inspection. This happens after the panel is installed and all the wires have been run through the walls, but before any insulation or drywall is installed. This allows the inspector to see all the wiring, the connections in the boxes, the staple supports, and the panel interior to ensure everything is correct. The second is the “final” inspection, which occurs after the house is complete and all the outlets, switches, and fixtures have been installed. The inspector verifies that all devices are working correctly and that the final installation is safe.
As your electrical contractor, Gragg Electrical Services is responsible for scheduling and meeting with the electrical inspector. We guarantee that all of our work is performed to the highest standards and is designed to pass these rigorous inspections the first time. Passing the electrical inspections is a prerequisite for the general contractor to receive the Certificate of Occupancy, which allows the home to be legally lived in. This inspection process ensures accountability and provides the homeowner with the ultimate assurance that their new electrical system was installed safely and professionally.
