Electrical Service Repair

The service entrance conductors are the large, heavy-duty wires that run from the weatherhead, through the meter base, and down to your main electrical panel. Over many years, the insulation on these wires can become cracked, brittle, and weathered, especially where they are exposed to sunlight. This degradation can expose the live conductors, creating a serious shock and fire hazard. As part of a service repair, we can replace these old, damaged service entrance conductors with new, properly rated wiring, ensuring a safe and insulated path for power to enter your home. This is a critical repair for maintaining the integrity of your entire electrical system.

When your main electrical service is damaged, it often requires close coordination with your local utility provider. It is important to understand what equipment is your responsibility and what belongs to the utility. Generally, the homeowner is responsible for the service mast, the meter base, and the wires attached to the house. The utility company is responsible for the wires coming from the pole to your house and for the electric meter itself. Our team at Gragg Electrical Services is experienced in this process. We will perform all the necessary repairs on your equipment, and then we will coordinate with the utility company to have them safely reconnect your service and restore your power.

Safety is paramount when performing any electrical service repair. This work involves de-energized high-voltage conductors that are directly connected to the power grid. It should never be attempted by a homeowner or a general handyman. Our licensed electricians have the training, experience, and personal protective equipment (PPE) required to work on this equipment safely. We follow strict lockout/tagout procedures and always verify that the system is de-energized before beginning our work. Our expertise ensures that the repair is not only effective but also performed without risk to you, your property, or our team.

This was a residential job to rewire (completely) a 70 year old house, so not an easy task. It took the amount of time I expected. I also expected my house to look like swiss cheese after the work was done. That was not the case at all. They found ways to fish wire that resulted in about 30% of the holes I expected. A new panel replaced a 10 year old panel put in by JENNINGS which was full of water, rust & damage. They replaced the service drop and weather-head. It was a lot of work and I am happy with the completed job. I would call them again for future work. Ask for Sean!

Gragg Electrical Services: They helped us out in a pinch. We had an issue where we need someone out the same day to deal with a parking lot lighting issue. Not only did they come out same day and diagnose the issue. They were able to provide a solution and come out the next day to resolve it. Mind you we had other vendors on this who could not provide the same level of service Gragg Electrical did. I will be using them again for any electrical needs we have. Thank you so much for hard work on this for us.

Most Common Electrical Service Repair Questions

Damage to your home’s main electrical service can be an alarming event, often leaving you without power. Understanding the components and the repair process is helpful. Here are the answers to common questions about electrical service repairs.

If a falling tree limb, high winds, or any other event has pulled the main electrical service wires off of your house, it is a serious and dangerous situation. The very first thing you need to do is stay far away from the downed wires. Always assume that any downed power line is live and energized with a lethal voltage. Do not touch the wires, and do not touch anything the wires may be in contact with, such as a metal fence or a pool of water. Keep your family and pets inside and away from the area. Your immediate priority is to ensure everyone’s safety.

Your first phone call should be to your local electric utility company’s emergency number. Report the downed power line at your address immediately. They will dispatch a crew to your location to assess the situation and, most importantly, to de-energize the line at the utility pole. This will make the area safe. The utility crew will also tell you what equipment on your house has been damaged and is your responsibility to repair. Typically, the homeowner is responsible for the pipe (service mast) and the wires attached to the house, while the utility is responsible for the wire coming from the pole (the service drop).

Once the utility has made the area safe, your next call should be to a licensed electrical contractor like Gragg Electrical Services. We are responsible for repairing the equipment on your house. We can replace the bent or broken service mast, install a new weatherhead, and re-attach the service entrance wires to your home. Once our repairs are complete and have passed any required inspection, we will notify the utility company. The utility will then send their crew back out to safely reconnect their service drop wires to your newly repaired equipment, restoring power to your home.

The service mast is the strong metal pipe, or conduit, that extends up through your roof. Its primary purpose is to support the weight of the heavy overhead service drop wires coming from the utility pole. It also provides a protected raceway for the service entrance conductors to travel down into your electric meter and panel. The NEC has strict rules for the height of the service mast to ensure the overhead wires have a safe clearance above the ground, driveways, and any accessible parts of your roof. This clearance is crucial to prevent accidental contact with the high-voltage wires.

A service mast most often needs repair due to physical damage. Severe weather is the leading cause. The force of high winds or the weight of a heavy, ice-coated tree limb falling on the service drop wires can exert a massive amount of leverage on the mast. This can cause the mast to bend over, break, or even rip a hole in your roof. This is a hazardous situation that leaves the main power lines unsupported and can expose live electrical conductors. This type of damage requires immediate repair by a qualified electrician.

The repair process involves an electrician replacing the bent or broken mast with a new, heavy-duty rigid steel conduit. They will properly flash and seal the new mast where it penetrates the roof to prevent leaks. The electrician will also install a new weatherhead, which is the cap on top of the mast that prevents rain from getting inside the pipe. They will install new service entrance conductors inside the mast if the old ones were damaged. This is a complex repair that involves both electrical and roofing skills, and it is essential for safely restoring the main connection point for your home’s power.

Yes, a rusty meter box, also known as a meter base or meter socket, is a serious problem that should be addressed by an electrician. The meter box is the enclosure on the side of your house that holds the electric meter. If the metal on the outside of the box is showing significant rust, it is a strong indication that water has been getting inside the enclosure. Water and high-voltage electricity are a very dangerous combination. The moisture can cause the internal components, such as the metal jaws that grip the meter and the wire lugs, to corrode.

This internal corrosion creates poor electrical connections. A poor connection acts as a point of high resistance in the circuit. As the full electrical current for your house struggles to pass through this corroded connection, it generates a tremendous amount of heat. This can cause the meter base to overheat, melt components, and potentially start a fire on the side of your house. It can also lead to arcing, voltage fluctuations, and intermittent power outages throughout your home. A rusty meter box is a clear sign that the internal components are likely compromised and the unit is no longer safe.

The only safe solution for a badly rusted meter base is to have it replaced. An electrician will coordinate with the utility company to have your power temporarily shut off and the meter removed. They will then detach the service wires and remove the old, rusty box from your house. A new, code-compliant, and weather-tight meter base will be installed in its place. The electrician will then make clean, tight, and secure connections with the service wires inside the new box. This repair eliminates the fire hazard and ensures a solid, reliable flow of power into your home for years to come.

A weatherhead, also known as a service head or weather cap, is a crucial component of an overhead electrical service. It is the hooded, downward-facing cap that sits on top of the service mast. The primary job of the weatherhead is to prevent rain, snow, and ice from entering the service mast and getting into your electrical equipment. The service entrance conductors coming from the utility pole loop down and then up into the openings in the bottom of the weatherhead. This downward loop, called a drip loop, ensures that water drips off the wires before it has a chance to travel up and into the service mast.

A weatherhead is a simple but vital part of protecting your electrical system. It is typically made of durable PVC, aluminum, or galvanized steel to withstand years of exposure to the elements. However, over time, a weatherhead can become damaged or degraded. The plastic can become brittle from UV exposure and crack. It can also be damaged by falling tree limbs or severe weather that tears the service wires from the house. A cracked or broken weatherhead can allow water to flow directly down the service mast and into your meter base and even your main electrical panel, causing catastrophic corrosion and damage.

If you notice that your weatherhead is cracked, broken, or missing, it should be repaired promptly by a licensed electrician. An electrician can safely disconnect the service wires at the connection point and install a new weatherhead on top of the service mast. They will ensure the new one is securely attached and that the wires have a proper drip loop in place. This is a relatively simple and inexpensive repair that can prevent thousands of dollars worth of damage to the more expensive components of your electrical service. It is an essential piece of preventative maintenance for your home.

The division of responsibility for the electrical service equipment is a common point of confusion for homeowners. In general, the electric utility company is responsible for the power lines running along the street and for the single set of wires, known as the service drop, that runs from their pole to the attachment point on your house. They are also responsible for the electric meter itself, which they own and use for billing purposes. If there is a problem with these specific components, such as a frayed wire in the middle of the service drop, the utility company is responsible for the repair.

The homeowner’s responsibility typically begins at the point where the utility’s wires connect to your house. This connection point is called the “point of attachment.” Everything from that point inward is generally owned and maintained by the homeowner. This includes the service mast, the weatherhead, the meter base (the box the meter plugs into), and the large service entrance conductors that run from the meter base to your main electrical panel inside. If a storm tears the wires off your house and damages the mast and the wires attached to it, you are responsible for hiring an electrician to fix that equipment.

This division of labor is important to understand during an emergency. When you call the utility to report that your service wires have been pulled down, they will come out to make the situation safe. However, they will not repair your bent mast or re-attach the wires to your house. They will tell you that you need to hire an electrician to make those repairs first. Once your electrician has completed the work and it passes inspection, the utility will then come back to complete their part of the job, which is reconnecting their service drop wires to your newly repaired equipment.

The service entrance conductors are the main set of heavy-duty wires that carry the entire electrical supply for your home. For an overhead service, they begin at the weatherhead, where they connect to the utility’s service drop wires. They then run down through the service mast, through the electric meter socket where your power usage is measured, and continue on to the main lugs of your main electrical panel inside your house. For a 200-amp service, these are very thick wires, typically made of aluminum or copper. They are the lifeline of your entire electrical system.

These conductors are responsible for handling the full amperage of your service. Because of this, their insulation must be in perfect condition. Over many decades, the insulation on older service entrance conductors can become weathered, cracked, and brittle from exposure to sun, heat, and cold. This is particularly true for the sections of wire that may be exposed between the weatherhead and the meter base. Damaged insulation can expose the live metal conductor, which carries a lethal voltage. This creates a severe risk of electric shock and can allow water to enter the system, leading to corrosion and faults.

If an inspection reveals that your service entrance conductors have degraded insulation, they should be replaced. This is a major electrical repair that requires a licensed electrician and coordination with the utility to shut off the power. The electrician will pull the old, damaged wires out and install a brand new set of properly sized conductors. This repair restores the integrity of your main power feed and eliminates the significant hazards associated with compromised service wires. It ensures a safe and reliable connection from the utility grid to your home’s electrical panel.

The time it takes to complete an electrical service repair depends heavily on the extent of the damage and the coordination required with the utility company. For a relatively straightforward repair, such as replacing a damaged weatherhead or a rusty meter box on a house where the service mast is intact, an experienced electrician can often complete the work in just a few hours. This would involve a scheduled power outage while the electrician safely replaces the damaged component. The total time you are without power would likely be in the range of three to five hours.

However, if the damage is more severe, such as a completely bent or broken service mast that has been torn from the roof, the repair will take longer. This type of job requires not only electrical work but also some roofing work to properly mount and seal the new mast. This could be a full-day project. The electrician needs to carefully remove the old mast, install a new one, ensure it is properly supported and flashed, and then run the new wires. This all has to be completed before the utility can be called back to reconnect the power.

The biggest variable in the timeline is often the utility company’s schedule. After the electrician has completed the repairs on your house, the work typically needs to be inspected by the local building department. Only after it passes inspection will the utility schedule a crew to come and reconnect your service drop. While we work as quickly as possible and have good relationships with local utilities, we are still subject to their scheduling availability. We will always communicate clearly with you throughout the process to give you the most accurate timeline possible for getting your power restored.

Yes, in some situations, repairing a damaged electrical service can trigger a requirement from the local building authority to upgrade other parts of the service to meet modern codes. This is often related to the “25% rule” or a similar local ordinance. This rule might state that if more than a certain percentage of the service equipment is being replaced or repaired, then the entire service must be brought up to the current code standards. For example, if a storm damages your service mast and also your meter base, the inspector may require you to upgrade to a 200-amp service if you only have an older 100-amp service.

This is done to ensure safety and to avoid having brand new components connected to outdated and potentially unsafe ones. If you have to replace a significant portion of the service entrance equipment, it is a logical time to ensure the entire system is modern and safe. For example, if you have an old, ungrounded service, a major repair will almost certainly trigger a requirement to install a brand new, code-compliant grounding electrode system. The building inspector will not approve a repair that leaves a known safety deficiency in place.

When our electrician from Gragg Electrical Services assesses the damage to your service, we will be able to tell you if the scope of the repair is likely to trigger a mandatory upgrade. We are highly familiar with the local codes in the East Canton area and can anticipate these requirements. We will provide you with a comprehensive quote that includes any required upgrades so that you understand the full scope of the project from the beginning. Our goal is to perform a repair that is not only functional but also fully compliant with today’s safety standards.
