Smart Home Installation

Enhancing your home’s security is another major benefit of smart technology. We can professionally install smart video doorbells, like Ring or Nest Doorbell. These devices allow you to see and speak to whoever is at your front door from your smartphone, whether you are at home or on the other side of the world. We can also install smart outdoor security cameras and motion-activated floodlights that can send alerts to your phone when they detect activity. These installations often require running new low-voltage or line-voltage wiring, which our electricians can handle safely and cleanly.

Even your home’s outlets can be made smarter. We can install smart outlets and plugs that allow you to control any device you plug into them remotely. This is great for turning off a lamp, a fan, or a small appliance that you may have accidentally left on after leaving the house. Some smart outlets can also monitor the energy usage of the device plugged into them, helping you to identify which appliances are costing you the most money. We can replace your existing standard outlets with these upgraded smart receptacles.

A successful smart home depends on a reliable home network. Our electricians can help strengthen your home’s connectivity by installing hardwired ethernet ports in key locations like a home office or entertainment center. A hardwired connection is always faster and more reliable than Wi-Fi. We can also help you find the optimal location for your Wi-Fi router and any mesh network extenders to ensure a strong signal throughout your entire home, which is essential for all of your smart devices to communicate effectively.

This was a residential job to rewire (completely) a 70 year old house, so not an easy task. It took the amount of time I expected. I also expected my house to look like swiss cheese after the work was done. That was not the case at all. They found ways to fish wire that resulted in about 30% of the holes I expected. A new panel replaced a 10 year old panel put in by JENNINGS which was full of water, rust & damage. They replaced the service drop and weather-head. It was a lot of work and I am happy with the completed job. I would call them again for future work. Ask for Sean!

Gragg Electrical Services: They helped us out in a pinch. We had an issue where we need someone out the same day to deal with a parking lot lighting issue. Not only did they come out same day and diagnose the issue. They were able to provide a solution and come out the next day to resolve it. Mind you we had other vendors on this who could not provide the same level of service Gragg Electrical did. I will be using them again for any electrical needs we have. Thank you so much for hard work on this for us.

I called them to install a kitchen light, and add light switches, as well as to install some plugs in my basement. While he was there, he also fixed the issue with my outside motion light in the process (as it tied into the same switch plate). The customer service and professionalism for this company is phenomenal. They answer your call and/ or call you back quickly. They communicate exactly when they are coming as they set up an appointment, and called the day of to let me know he was on his way. I strongly recommend this company and will be sure to use them for future electrical needs.

Most Common Smart Home Installation Questions

Smart home technology is rapidly evolving, and homeowners often have questions about how to get started and which devices are right for them. Understanding the installation and benefits can help you create a more connected home. Here are the answers to common smart home questions.

A smart switch and a smart bulb are two different ways to achieve smart control over your home’s lighting, and they each have their pros and cons. A smart switch is a device that completely replaces your existing, standard wall switch. It looks very similar to a regular dimmer or decorator-style switch, but it has internal electronics that connect to your home’s Wi-Fi network. The smart switch then controls the entire circuit it is connected to, meaning it can control any and all light fixtures that are wired to it. This is a very clean and intuitive solution, as you can still control the lights manually from the wall switch just like you always have, but you also gain the ability to control them from your phone.

A smart bulb, on the other hand, is a light bulb that has the smart technology and Wi-Fi radio built directly into the bulb itself. You simply screw the smart bulb into any standard light fixture, and then you can control that individual bulb from your smartphone app. The main advantage of smart bulbs is their simplicity for single-light applications and their ability to change colors or color temperature, which most smart switches cannot do. However, to use a smart bulb, the light switch that controls its fixture must always be left in the “on” position. If someone accidentally flips the wall switch off, the smart bulb loses power and can no longer be controlled by the app.

The choice between them often depends on the application. For controlling a room with multiple light fixtures, like a kitchen with six recessed lights, a single smart switch is a much more practical and cost-effective solution than buying six individual smart bulbs. For a single table lamp or a fixture where you want the ability to change colors, a smart bulb is an excellent and easy choice. Our electricians can help you decide which solution is best and can professionally install smart switches throughout your home.

For most common smart home devices, you do not need to have your house completely rewired. The majority of smart devices, such as smart switches, outlets, and thermostats, are designed to work with your home’s existing standard electrical wiring. A smart switch, for example, is installed in the same electrical box as your old switch and uses the same hot, neutral, and ground wires. This is what makes retrofitting an existing home with smart technology relatively easy and affordable.

However, there is one common wiring issue that can arise, particularly in older homes. Many smart switches and thermostats require a “neutral wire” to get the continuous power they need to run their electronics. In some older homes, the wiring at the switch boxes was done in a way that did not include a neutral wire. If you open a switch box and only see two wires, you may not be able to install a standard smart switch there. An electrician would need to run a new wire from a nearby location to provide the required neutral. Some companies do make special “no-neutral-required” smart switches, but they are less common.

While you do not need to rewire your whole house, a strong and reliable Wi-Fi network is the most important “infrastructure” for a smart home. If your Wi-Fi signal is weak or spotty in certain areas of your house, your smart devices in those areas will not work reliably. As part of a smart home installation, we can also help you optimize your home network, which may include running ethernet cables for a more robust connection or installing a mesh Wi-Fi system to ensure a strong signal everywhere.

While it is possible for a tech-savvy homeowner to install a smart thermostat themselves, it can often be more complicated than it looks, and a professional installation is generally recommended to avoid problems. The installation requires turning off the power to your furnace and working with the low-voltage control wires. A mistake in connecting these wires could potentially damage the sensitive control board in your furnace, leading to a very expensive repair. An electrician or a qualified HVAC technician knows exactly how to handle these connections safely.

The most common issue that homeowners run into during a DIY installation is the lack of a “C-wire,” or common wire. Most smart thermostats need a C-wire to provide them with continuous 24-volt power from the furnace. If your existing thermostat wiring does not have a C-wire, the smart thermostat may not work correctly or at all. An electrician can solve this problem by running a new thermostat cable that includes a C-wire, or by using a special adapter that can provide power without a dedicated C-wire.

By hiring a professional from Gragg Electrical Services, you can be confident that your new smart thermostat is installed correctly and safely. We will ensure it is compatible with your specific HVAC system, that it has the proper power supply, and that it is configured correctly to control both your heating and cooling. We can get the job done quickly and correctly, saving you the potential frustration and risk of a DIY installation.

A video doorbell is a smart home security device that replaces your traditional doorbell button. It contains a small video camera, a microphone, a speaker, and a motion sensor. When a visitor presses the doorbell button, it sends an alert to your smartphone, allowing you to see and have a two-way conversation with the person at your door, no matter where you are. It also records a video clip of the interaction. The motion sensor can also alert you and start recording whenever someone approaches your door, even if they do not press the button. This makes it a powerful security tool for monitoring your front porch.

There are two main types of video doorbells: battery-powered and hardwired. Battery-powered models are easier to install but require you to periodically remove and recharge the battery. Hardwired video doorbells are connected to your home’s existing low-voltage doorbell wiring. This is the preferred installation method, as the hardwired connection continuously powers the doorbell so you never have to worry about a dead battery. It also allows the video doorbell to ring your home’s existing mechanical or digital chime, just like a regular doorbell.

Our electricians specialize in the professional installation of hardwired video doorbells. If you have existing doorbell wiring, we can safely connect the new smart doorbell to it. If the voltage from your existing doorbell transformer is not sufficient for the new device, which is a common issue, we can install a new, more powerful transformer. If you do not have any existing doorbell wiring, we can run a new low-voltage wire from a nearby power source to your front door, allowing you to install a hardwired video doorbell for maximum reliability.

Yes, the ability to control your lights remotely when you are away from home is one of the primary benefits of a smart lighting system. Once you have smart switches or smart bulbs installed and connected to your home’s Wi-Fi network, you can control them from anywhere in the world using a dedicated app on your smartphone or tablet. As long as your phone has an internet connection and your home’s internet is working, you can turn your lights on or off with the tap of a button.

This remote control capability is fantastic for both convenience and security. For convenience, if you realize you forgot to turn off a light after you have already left the house, you can simply open the app and turn it off, saving energy. For security, you can make your home look occupied even when you are on vacation. You can set schedules for your lights to turn on and off at various times in the evening, mimicking your normal routine. Some systems even have a “vacation mode” that will randomize the lighting schedule to make it look even more natural. This is a great deterrent for potential burglars.

In addition to direct remote control, you can also integrate your smart lighting with other smart home platforms like Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. This allows you to control your lights with your voice. You can also create complex automations. For example, you could link your lights to your smart security system so that if a motion sensor is triggered outside, some of the lights inside your house will automatically turn on. The possibilities for remote control and automation are nearly endless.

A smart outlet, or smart receptacle, is a device that replaces a standard wall outlet and connects to your home’s Wi-Fi network. It allows you to remotely control whatever is plugged into it. A smart outlet typically looks just like a regular decorator-style outlet, but it has a small button and an indicator light on it. Using a smartphone app, you can turn the power to the outlet on or off from anywhere. This is a great way to control simple plug-in devices like lamps, fans, or holiday decorations.

Another common form of this technology is a smart plug. A smart plug is a small adapter that you plug into your existing standard wall outlet. You then plug your lamp or appliance into the smart plug. The smart plug then connects to your Wi-Fi and gives you the same remote control capabilities as a built-in smart outlet. Smart plugs are a very easy and inexpensive way to get started with home automation, as they do not require any wiring.

Our electricians can install built-in smart outlets for a more permanent and seamless solution. These are great for locations where you know you will always want to have smart control, such as for the lamps in your living room or bedroom. Some smart outlets also have the added feature of energy monitoring. The app can show you exactly how much electricity the device plugged into it is consuming. This can be a great tool for identifying “energy vampire” appliances and finding ways to lower your electric bill.

Yes, a thoughtfully installed and well-functioning smart home system can definitely increase the value and appeal of your home to potential buyers. In today’s tech-savvy world, smart home features are increasingly moving from the “luxury” category to the “expected” category, especially for younger buyers. Features like a smart thermostat, smart lighting, and built-in security features are seen as desirable modern upgrades that add convenience, efficiency, and security to a home. A home that is already equipped with these features has a competitive advantage over a similar home that is not.

The key is to have a system that is professional, integrated, and easy to use. A hodgepodge of different DIY devices that do not work well together is not a value-add. However, a professionally installed system with built-in smart switches, a modern smart thermostat, and integrated security features presents a very attractive, high-tech package. It signals to buyers that the home is modern and has been well-maintained. The value is not just in the cost of the devices themselves, but in the lifestyle and convenience they offer.

Features that add to energy efficiency, like a smart thermostat, and features that enhance security, like a video doorbell and smart locks, tend to have the highest return on investment. While you may not recoup every dollar you spend, a smart home can help your house sell faster and for a higher price. It makes your home more memorable and appealing to the modern buyer who is looking for a connected and convenient living experience.

Security is a very important consideration for any smart home, as these devices are connected to the internet. While the convenience is great, it is crucial to take steps to secure your smart home network from potential hacking or unauthorized access. The single most important step you can take is to secure your home’s Wi-Fi network itself. You must use a strong, unique password for your Wi-Fi router, and you should use the WPA2 or WPA3 encryption standard, which is the most secure option. You should also change the default administrator password for your router’s settings page.

When choosing smart home devices, it is best to stick with well-known, reputable brands like Google (Nest), Amazon (Ring), Philips Hue, and Lutron. These large companies invest heavily in security and regularly release firmware updates to patch any vulnerabilities that are discovered. Cheaper, off-brand devices may not have the same level of security or support. It is also very important that you keep the firmware on all of your smart devices, as well as the apps on your phone, updated to the latest version. These updates often contain critical security patches.

You should also use a strong and unique password for each of your smart home accounts. Avoid using the same password that you use for your email or online banking. Enabling two-factor authentication (2FA) on your accounts wherever it is offered adds another powerful layer of security. While no internet-connected device is 100% un-hackable, by following these best practices, you can make your smart home very secure and significantly reduce the risk of any unauthorized access.
